Not only was the baby unaffected by the disease, it turned out that she was HLA-identical; a perfect match.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Umbilical Cord Blood over Bone Marrow Transplant<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Given the unknown outcome of cord blood transplants at the time, Matthew\u2019s transplant had to take place outside the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Mathew\u2019s physicians at the time, including Dr. Joanne Kurtzberg, current <a href=\"https:\/\/cellsforlife.com\/cells-for-life-founding-member-of-cord-blood-association\/\">President of the CBA<\/a>, arranged for the umbilical cord blood to be frozen and stored by American Scientist, Dr. Hal Broxmeyer. The\u00a0sample was then flown from a lab in Indianapolis to the H\u00f4pital Saint-Louis in Paris where the operation was completed by French physician Dr. Eliane Gluckman.<\/p>\n<p>The collaboration was hailed as an international effort that resulted in the world\u2019s first-ever successful transplant using stem cells taken from umbilical cord blood.<\/p>\n<p>The transplantation was an industry first and a medical success that, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.medcells.ae\/blog\/matthew-farrow-the-worlds-first-cord-blood-transplant-recipient\">Cells4Life<\/a> Group UK, has led to over 30,000 transplants for the treatment of blood disorders around the world.<\/p>\n<p>Today, Matthew is 32 years old, married, a father, and an advocate and spokesperson for <a href=\"https:\/\/cordbloodbank.corduse.com\/about-cord-use-leadership.php\">Cord:Use<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#_ftnref1\" name=\"_ftn1\">[1]<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhlbi.nih.gov\/health\/health-topics\/topics\/fanconi\">National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In 1988, Matthew Farrow, of North Carolina, became the first person to ever receive a transplant using umbilical cord blood.
