stroke and stem cellsStem cell treatments may help heal stroke-damaged areas of the brain by stimulating the growth of blood vessels, according to results of a clinical trial by researchers at Imperial CollegeLondon.

A type of stem cell known as CD34+ was infused into the brains of five patients

soon after they experienced strokes. After six months, three of the four patients who had severe strokes were able to walk, and all five could carry out everyday tasks with help. The results were reported in the journal Stem Cell Translational Medicine. BBC (8/8)
