Leading Ontario antenatal education provider delivers free online classes across Canada as pregnancy and birthing information requirements continue throughout the COVID-19 crisis
MISSISSAUGA, ON, June 9, 2020 /CNW/ – While the impact of COVID-19 impacted many aspects of life, the fundamentals of pregnancy and childbirth remained the same – except traditional prenatal classes suddenly were not possible.
In response, Markham Prenatal, one of Canada’s leading prenatal education providers, immediately began offering free, live prenatal class webinars as an alternative to their in-class programs which have run for over 30 years. The enormous, somewhat unexpected response has demonstrated the need that this new forum is fulfilling – over 4,000 expectant mothers-to-be from over 50 hospitals nationwide have attended the free classes.
“I had a lot of questions that everyone says is normal for my first baby, but all of a sudden the place to get those concerns answered wasn’t there. I attended the Markham Prenatal online classes and it was very relieving to hear the information. It was so great to have a place where I could ask questions and feel like I was getting an expert response. A nurse even called me to follow up after the classes and ensured that my questions were answered. The online environment worked really well. I’m super appreciative of the service,” said first time mom-to-be Katie Arthurworrey from Oshawa.
“The pregnancy journey can often be quite different to what expectant parents imagine” says Leanne Casbourn, founder of Markham Prenatal. “As prenatal care providers, we felt compelled to help expectant moms by providing a nation-wide service during this unprecedented time. By adapting our classes to a free online live format, we felt we could contribute to the community more broadly. As it turns out, just by the tremendous number of attendees we’ve had, it seems we were right. Our hope is that we are able to provide a measure of calm in what is a challenging time.”
Markham Prenatal’s online program has garnered specific support from hospitals such as Markham Stouffville, North York General, Mackenzie Health and Humber River Hospital.
Each prenatal webinar is two hours in length, and sponsored by Cells for Life (www.cellsforlife.com) part of Canada’s largest and most experienced cord blood banking group. The classes help prepare parents for one of the most exciting times in their life – covering stages of labour, positions for labour, cord blood/tissue banking options, breastfeeding and postnatal care considerations. All webinars have question periods integrated into the class content, and classes are available in English and Mandarin.
