For Keegan and Tayelyn Doheney, preserving their daughter’s newborn stem cells was an easy decision rooted in personal experience, gratitude, and hope for the future.

Their story began with a chance meeting at a coffee shop and grew into a life together filled with dreams of building a family. When they learned they were expecting their first child, a daughter, they were thrilled to begin their journey into parenthood.

For Keegan, the decision to preserve newborn stem cells carried special meaning. As a childhood cancer survivor, he personally benefited from a stem cell transplant using his brother’s preserved cord blood.‡ The experience shaped not only his life, but also Tayelyn’s desire to pursue pediatric nursing after learning his story.

“When the conversation came up, it was a no-brainer,” Tayelyn says.

When their healthcare provider discussed cord blood banking during pregnancy, the couple immediately saw the value. They viewed stem cell preservation as an opportunity to potentially help protect not only their daughter, but future siblings as well.

“As a survivor of childhood cancer and the beneficiary of a cord blood transplant from my own sibling, I cannot express enough the feeling of security that cord blood banking creates,” says Keegan.

For the Doheneys, preserving newborn stem cells offers peace of mind. While they hope their family never needs the cells, knowing they are available provides reassurance in the face of the many uncertainties of parenthood.

“The reassurance and comfort that comes from knowing that we made the choice to save her stem cells and potentially protect our family cannot be understated.” Keegan says.

The couple also hopes their story helps other families learn more about their options and understand the potential impact of stem cell preservation.†

“We want to show the amazing things that people can do and create when they are given a second chance,” Keegan says.

They shared that their experience preserving was simple and seamless, allowing them to focus on welcoming their daughter. Today, Keegan remains a passionate advocate, sharing his story in hopes that it may help another family find comfort and possibility during a difficult time.

For the Doheney family, newborn stem cell preservation is more than a service. It is a reminder that one decision at birth may help protect the future and provide additional peace of mind for years to come.

“I would recommend to a friend, family, and even strangers,” Keegan says.

† The use of cord blood is determined by the treating physician and is influenced by many factors, including the patient’s medical condition, the characteristics of the sample, and whether the cord blood should come from the patient or an appropriately matched donor. Cord blood has established uses in transplant medicine; however, its use in regenerative medicine is still being researched. There is no guarantee that potential medical applications being studied in the laboratory or clinical trials will become available.
† Cord tissue use is still in early research stages, and there is no guarantee that treatments using cord tissue will be available in the future. Cord tissue is stored whole. Additional processing prior to use will be required to extract and prepare any of the multiple cell types from cryopreserved cord tissue.
